GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Learners who participate in the Business English Course learn how to apply their English skills to typical Business situations. As MILA's mission is to facilitate student's growth with a quality, personalized program to meet students' individual needs, having a business program is seen to be in line with the school's goals. The need also came from our students who came to us asking for a more specific course aimed at the job market. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to write and dialogue in a variety of formats for business purposes, including emails, memos and policy documents. In addition to having practiced individual presentations, in groups, sales pitches and negotiations, they will also be able to read and write, summarize and understand business-related content.
For existing students
Upon Completion of American English File 4 in the General English program with a score of 70% or higher, students are eligible to enroll in the Business English Pre-Intermediate.
Upon Completion of American English File 5 in the General English program with a score of 70% or higher, students are eligible to enroll in the Business English Intermediate.
Rationale: The Business English curriculum is a specialized curriculum which teach specific content. Therefore, students must have a strong command of general English. Because of that, it will not match their current CEFR level in General English. It’s the difference between proficiency in social language and proficiency in academic or professional settings; we know academic and professional settings take more time for a student to demonstrate proficiency.
For new students
A score of at least 70% on the American English File 4 level final exam to enroll in Business English Pre-Intermediate. If a student cannot test at that level, they will be enrolled in the General English level they test at and are eligible to enter into the business English program upon completion of American English File 4.
If a student feels their language is beyond an English File 4, they can attempt the English File 5 exam. The same procedure will be used: if they pass, they enter Business English Intermediate. If they do not, they will be placed in the appropriate level and asked to complete that level prior to entering into the Business English Intermediate.
*The Business English Program is a rigorous program that requires the student to have a strong command of general English skills. If the student does not test at the appropriate level, they will need to complete the general English level they test at. This is to ensure they have the prerequisite skills necessary to succeed in the specialized course.
Students can understand polite requests and information from receiving professional phone calls; students can respond to complaints regarding customer service; students can effectively listen for the purpose of negotiation and collaborative planning (i.e. scheduling a business meeting).
Students can understand responses using different forms of “yes” ; students can understand presentations using approximate numbers and understand cues in taking part in teleconferences; students can listen to and record pertinent contact information without errors, both personally and via telephone.
Students can understand language in follow- up calls and conversations dealing with teleconferences and both work and phone situations; students can ask relevant questions in a meeting environment.
Students can listen and strategically pose questions to guide a conversation towards a specific negotiation objective; Students can clarify professional misunderstandings by asking clarification questions and using adverbs to qualify answers; Students can understand dialogues taking part in teleconferences and processing discussions of factors for success while using “vague language”.
